City: Recycling participation
rises 31% with single-stream
Jan. 27 – Fort Wayne, Ind., Mayor
Tom Henry wants to reach an 80% recycling
participation rate in the city this year.
The city began a single-cart
recycling program in 2011 that replaced the
two-bin system. After the switch, the recycling
participation increased from 39%
to 70%, according to The Journal Gazette of Fort
Wayne.
The city picked up 12,419 tons of recyclables
last year, significantly more than the 8,837
tons in 2010, the paper reported.
Residents also threw away 6,000 fewer tons of
waste last year than in 2010, with 88,953 tons.
Fort Wayne began receiving half of the profits
from recyclable materials in 2011, generating
$426,932, according to the paper.
"I know we can do even better,"
Henry told the paper.

the landfill or transfer station
to our recycling facility.
