Mulch FAQ

Common questions about our recycled mulch products.

  • What's the difference between natural and dyed mulch?
Natural mulch is shredded wood in its original color — it weathers to a silvery gray over time. Dyed mulch (black, brown, red) holds its color longer (typically 6–12 months) because we add a colorant during processing. Both are made from the same recycled wood stream; the difference is purely aesthetic.
  • How much mulch do I need?
For most landscape beds, you want 2–3 inches of depth. Use our volume calculator on the mulch page — enter your bed dimensions and it tells you exactly how many cubic yards to order. As a rough rule: 1 cubic yard covers 100 sq ft at 3" deep.
  • Will the mulch attract termites or other pests?
No. Our mulch is made from clean, sorted construction wood that's been ground and screened. It doesn't attract termites the way fresh wood debris from a forested area might. The wood is too processed to be appealing as nesting material.
  • Is the dyed mulch safe for pets and kids?
Yes. The colorants we use are non-toxic, water-based, and designed for landscape use. They're safe for pets, kids, plants, and groundwater. They don't leach harmful chemicals into the soil.
  • How often should I replace my mulch?
Most homeowners refresh mulch once a year, typically in spring. Dyed mulches may need a refresh every 6–12 months to maintain color; natural mulches can go 18–24 months between top-offs. The mulch underneath is still doing its job (moisture retention, weed suppression) even as the top layer weathers.
  • Can I get mulch delivered, or do I have to pick it up?
Both. You can pick up at our Troy facility during business hours, or we can deliver. For deliveries, we have a minimum order — call us at 434-589-1948 for current pricing and to schedule.
  • Do you offer bulk pricing for landscapers and contractors?
Yes. We have contractor pricing for ongoing customers. Contact our sales team to set up an account.
  • Is your mulch sourced sustainably?
It's actually more than sustainable — it's reclaimed. Every cubic yard of our mulch is made from clean wood that would otherwise end up in a landfill. By using our mulch, you're keeping construction wood out of the waste stream.
